Backup Power for Phone Services During Outages (Indiantown residential customers)
Your residential phone service is provided using fiber-optics which requires backup power to function in the case of an electrical power outage. You are not required to have a battery backup (BBU) installed with your phone service. However, without a BBU or alternate power source, such as a generator, you will not be able to make calls during an electrical power outage.
We highly recommend a battery backup due to the frequent power surges and outages that occur in our South Florida climate.
Blue Stream Fiber offers a battery backup unit (BBU) through a monthly maintenance plan for no up-front cost and an affordable monthly fee. You also have the option to opt-out of the BBU maintenance plan, make a one-time purchase of the unit from Blue Stream Fiber or another source, and install a unit yourself.*
Battery Backup Maintenance Plan*
Blue Stream Fiber offers a battery backup unit (BBU) through a monthly maintenance plan:
- $1.95/mo. for up to 8 hr. unit
- $5.95/mo. for up to 24 hr. unit
The plan includes:
- No upfront cost to install BBU
- Backup unit with battery and installation
- Ongoing maintenance, repair, monitoring of the unit
- Lifetime battery replacement, as needed
BBU features:
- Voltage protection
- Lightning protection

*As standard practice, Blue Stream Fiber will install a battery backup unit and enroll you into our Battery Backup Maintenance Plan when your phone and/or internet services are installed. You can choose to opt-out of that maintenance plan when you sign up for service or at any time.
Self or Third-party Install, Maintenance and Replacement of Battery Backup Unit
If you opt-out of our BBU Maintenance Plan, you can purchase the unit and replacement batteries from Blue Stream Fiber and install it yourself or purchase one from another source. In either case, you will be responsible for any future costs to install or replace batteries.

Troubleshooting and Maintenance of the Battery Backup Unit
As part of your BBU maintenance plan fee, we monitor your battery back up unit, but you should also be aware of proper usage and storage of your BBU and ways to self-test and monitor your unit.
Usage and storage
- Keep the BBU clean and free from dust or moisture.
- Avoid having the BBU in direct sunlight (your installer should help with this at install)
- To self-test the BBU, see the photo of the front panel of your BBU in the diagram below (or above) to understand the different modes and functions of your unit.

FAQs- BSF Battery Backup (BBU) Maintenance Plan Fee
- The fee is to cover your installed battery backup unit’s on-going maintenance, upgrades, monitoring, and battery replacement.
- To ensure our fiber-optic phone customers would always have access to service during electric power outages, we implemented a standard practice to install a battery backup unit for no charge when you sign up for phone service. We also have implemented doing this same courtesy for internet customers. An affordable monthly maintenance plan fee is charged to cover the costs for monitoring, repairs, and battery replacement.
The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) made rulings starting in December of 2015 that require companies that supply fiber-optic based phone services to offer an up to 8-hour battery backup option to customers. This allows for your fiber phone service to continue to function properly during an electrical power outage for up to 8 hours.
As of February 13, 2019, Blue Stream Fiber has been required to provide you the option of an upgraded unit with a battery that can last up to 24 hours after an electrical power outage.
Additionally, the FCC has ruled that the cost responsibility for installation, maintenance and batteries of these units lies with the consumer, not with providers like Blue Stream Fiber.
As standard practice and to ensure you have access to home phone service during power outages, we have no upfront cost to install a battery backup unit. We do charge an affordable $1.95/mo. BBU maintenance fee. You can request an upgrade to a $5.95/mo. fee for an up to 24-hour BBU.
You may opt out of the BBU maintenance fee, but the FCC has ruled you will be responsible for any cost for install, maintenance, unit replacement, or replacement of batteries.
- No. You may opt-out of having any BBU Maintenance Plan fee.
- If you opt out, then you will be totally responsible for any ongoing battery backup maintenance, upgrades and battery replacement costs.
- If you choose not to pay the monthly battery backup maintenance plan fee, you take the risk of your fiber phone services (and internet service if you also subscribe to that) not working during a power outage. However, we highly recommend you have the BBU maintenance plan to avoid paying for a replacement battery, a replacement unit or the cost of installing either of those.
- If you opt out of having the monthly $1.95/mo. or $5.95/mo. fee, then you will be responsible to pay for the battery unit and any replacement batteries at the current retail prices or for repairs, if required.
- You can choose to purchase these items from Blue Stream Fiber or from another source.
